Ideas for giving Unicon a taste of Aotearoa

Postby happycitysuperfun » Wed Jun 03, 2009 7:32 pm

It would be cool to make sure Unicon XV is a bit different from if any other country hosted it; by having haka or songs or some other things which make it unique -Southland contingent are planning plenty of co-ordinated randomness but are there things we could orchestrate nationally?

Ideas, go!

One of the reasons we are bringing Unicon to NZ is to show off our amazing country.

As far as Unicon specific events go....there is the traditional opening parade of nations. All the countries will be lined up in their national teams/uniforms/flags, and will do a parade along the Wellington waterfront to finish at Civic Square, where they will be greeted with a Powhiri.

About 95% of the riders will be from overseas, so it's a great chance to make an impression on your unicycling buddies from around the world.

If you want to help out, get out on the forums/facebook/MSN etc and show them how awesome NZ is! Give them a reason to stay in NZ- ideas for travel, places to see/visit etc. Many of them have no idea what's over here....I had to tell someone recently they won't see any Kangaroos here

Hahaha.

I reckon maybe a good haka group from a high school or something should do a haka at the opening ceremony... That's the only thing tourists know about NZ I've heard lol, it should cause some disturbance.
Not a well thought out post.

That's already planned. We are having a Powhiri at Civic Square after the opening parade.

I've moved this over from the Unicon XV forum as it might get more discussion here.

The main reason I proposed the original Unicon bid to bring it here is to show off New Zealand and in particular my home town to unicyclists around the world, as well as promote the sport here.

Let's show them some good old Kiwi hospitality.

Some suggestions
-welcoming people at the airport
-someone posting interesting suggestions for touring/places and things to see in NZ- both on unicycling forums and on the Unicon website
-Workshops- you can run workshops which can be day rides around interesting trails. Consider organising a Day-Trip on the ferry to Picton and doing some of the Queen Charlotte Walkway
-Giveaways....maybe something more than the traditional Kiwi's.
-Anyone do Kapa Haka? Wouldn't it be cool to have a Kapa Haka workshop!
-A photography tour of Wellington?

We're looking at getting some stalls in to the Unicon lobby, including greenstone/bone carvers.

Any other ideas?

Don't worry about consent, we'll take care of that. The trials course will be already on the waterfront...it will be very visible to the public. You won't be able to start setting pallets all over the place though...for obvious reasons.

At this stage, we're keen to set the Trials course outside of Macs Brewery (have a meeting with them next week). Those of you who aren't familiar with Wellington...it's next to the NZX building on the waterfront, where those wooden poles are.
