Travelling from europe

Postby jlo » Wed Dec 17, 2008 9:43 pm

Hello,

I think somebody of the NZ-riders was in europe duringe the last years.

What fly did you choose. Was it a direct fly or did you have a break for one or two days in Dubai, Honkong, Tokyo or Singapur?

We can buy a direct one from London with a short stop in Honkong. But it takes 23h. So we think about a stop for one or two days in one of the cities.
I know that in Tokyo the airport is far away from the city, so it is not very usefull.

I hope someone of you did it the past and can give me a tip.

Thanks
Jan

Hi Jan,

It will be entirely dependent on which airline it is.

I've always flown Air NZ or Star Alliance partners. We tend to fly via Singapore or Bangkok to London.

There is also a flight Auckland-Hong Kong-London.

Almost all the flights I've ever taken to Europe or USA will take 24hrs of flying time, and some transit in South East Asia.

It might be nice to stopover for a couple of days to break up the travel. But I've always been in a hurry.

Hope that helps,

Ken

p/s if you come a week early, I'm planning a 24hr Record attempt. Also, there is plenty of good riding around Wellington and New Zealand.

I flew with Tony and Ken, Joe Dyson flew seperate and went via Australia, which saved him a few NZD$ but not worth it unless you really want to visit an airport for a few hours :D

I've flown between NZ and Europe a few times now. My preferred route is via Singapore with sufficient time between flights to check into the inexpensive airport travel hotel for 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep on a real bed in a dark silent room. The trips that I've done this on have been far more pleasant than the trips where I jumped straight onto another flight after the first.

If you have enough time, you can even take a day trip into Singapore as well, or take the free two hour coach tour from the airport.

I think last time I arrived in Singapore at 06:30, checked into the hotel and slept for 5.5 hours, had a shower, then around 13:00 took a train downtown for a few hours and came back to the airport around 21:00 for the 00:30 flight out. That was the best flight yet.

(N.B. It's essential to book the hotel ahead of time, as far ahead as you reasonably can. It's very sensibly priced and very popular. It's linked from the Singapore airport webpage.)
